Down Home Diner
Set inside the Reading Terminal Market, this Center City breakfast spot is known for its country-style dishes. Long lines are the norm on weekend mornings, when folks queue up for egg and meat scrambles, corn hoe cakes (corn cakes cooked on a griddle), and scrapple, a Pennsylvania Dutch dish made from pork, cornmeal, and flour. Lunch and dinner are also served, with homespun comfort foods like cast-iron fried chicken, meatloaf, and roast turkey with mashed potatoes. Though located in an urban farmer's market, all the trappings of a classic diner are present, from the neon lighting and open kitchen to the Naugahyde booths and counter seating.
