Cafe Sabarsky
Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner endeavors to make the dining experience at his Café Sabarsky, located within the Neue Gallerie, as authentically Viennese as possible. What results is scene that seems more Hapsburg than it does Manhattan, as Sabarsky features tall windows with translucent shades, ornately detailed wood paneling, Josef Hoffmann light fixtures, and banquettes covered in 1912 Otto Wagner fabric. Popular menu items include the smoked bratwurst, goulash, and trout palatschinken (a Central European pancake), and diligent patrons know to save room for the stiff Viennese coffee and desserts such as klimt torte (chocolate and hazelnut cake), Schwarzwälder kirschtorte (Black Forest chocolate cake with cream and cherries), and other irresistible creations displayed on the old fashioned sideboard.
