Buck's Naked BBQ

568 U.S. Route 1
Freeport , ME

One whiff of the hickory wood–smoked BBQ, and you'll be seduced by this roadhouse restaurant, one mile south of downtown Freeport. Here, under Christmas lights amid half-walls of corrugated metal, Buck wants everyone to have a rollicking good time; in addition to the 18 beers on tap and George Thorogood guitar jams, there's also a generous play area for little buckaroos. But more than the atmosphere, locals love this place for its great southern-kissed food. Along with sides like “fried pickled chips” and brown sugar–chipotle sweet potato fries, the menu has every sort of meat the carnivorously inclined could imagine (much of which is slow-smoked 8-14 hours), from corn dogs and pit-roasted chile-lime wings to juicy char-grilled burgers (with beef from Freeport's own Wolfe's Neck Farm) and a brazen house-smoked pork-on-bacon combo called the “Piggy Back.” Sure, you could order the “dinky salad,” but the waiter might give you the hairy eyeball.

Insider Tip: The restaurant also sells its house BBQ sauces (try the blueberry!) and Buck's award-winning Rub Love.
