A block from the White House and across the street from the World Bank, Breadline is easily spotted by its red and black umbrellas—and at lunchtime, by its large crowd. Opened in 1997 by ex-Marvelous Market baker Mark Furstenberg, this bakery and sandwich shop brings fresh, seasonal ingredients together for breakfast and lunch. A glass entrance leads to a small counter, with a place to order and a second place to pay. Flaky empanadas and individual pizzas are available, but the signatures include prosciutto, mascarpone, and fig jam on walnut bread, as well as an egg salad sandwich on olive bread. The menu changes daily to account for new specials, which include fries.
