Vanilla-Berry Crush

Duff uses jonge (or new-style) genever for this drink because it's lighter than the malty oude (old-style) genever or the even maltier korenwijn. He recommends the Vanilla-Berry Crush for outdoor get-togethers: "It's very much a sunny-summer-afternoon party drink."

  1. 1 lemon, ends discarded, cut into wedges
  2. 3 large strawberries, hulled
  3. Crushed ice
  4. 1 ounce genever
  5. 1 ounce crème de fraise or other good-quality strawberry liqueur
  6. 1 ounce vanilla liqueur
  1. In a rocks glass, muddle the lemon wedges and strawberries. Fill the glass with crushed ice, then add the genever, crème de fraise and vanilla liqueur. Pour the drink into a pint glass and then back into the rocks glass; pour back and forth 3 or 4 more times to mix well. Serve the cocktail in the rocks glass.
