"Top Shelf" Julep

"There are so many great mass-produced liquors available today," says John Coltharp. He uses one of them, Old Grand-Dad 114 bourbon, in this julep. "It's inexpensive and packed with flavor."

  1. 10 mint leaves, plus 2 mint sprigs for garnish
  2. 3/4 ounce Simple Syrup
  3. 1 1/2 ounces overproof bourbon
  4. 3/4 ounce peach eau-de-vie
  5. Crushed ice
  6. 1/2 ounce aged pot still rum
  1. In a highball glass, muddle the mint leaves with the Simple Syrup, then add the bourbon and eau-de-vie. Add crushed ice and stir, then add more crushed ice to fill the glass. Top with the rum and arrange the mint sprigs in the center of the drink.
