The Charleston Cocktail

Beverage director Patrick Emerson created this drink for a cocktail competition held by a local vodka company. The Madeira he uses is the Rare Wine Co.'s Charleston Sercial, which was fashioned after the delicate Madeiras that Charlestonians drank in the 18th and 19th centuries.

  • Servings: makes 1 drink


  • Ice cubes, plus crushed ice
  • 1 1/2 ounces vodka
  • 1/2 ounce Sercial Madeira, such as Blandy's
  • 2 ounces chilled brewed black tea
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup
  • 1/2 ounce Mint Syrup
  • 1/2 ounce water
  • 1 mint sprig

How to make this recipe

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add all of the remaining ingredients except the crushed ice and mint sprig. Shake well; strain into a pilsner glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with the mint sprig.
