Sweet Martini

According to Eric Alperin, very early Martinis were made with gin and sweet, not dry, vermouth. This one, from around 1888, has a sherry-like taste.

Fill a pint glass with ice. Add the gin and vermouth and stir well. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish the drink with the brandied cherry.
