Barman St. John Frizell prefers to mix this drink with Carpano Antica Formula, a slightly less sweet vermouth than the one bon vivant Charles H. Baker Jr. calls for in his 1937 drinking treatise, The Gentleman's Companion, Volume II.

2 ounces rye whiskey
3/4 ounce Carpano Antica Formula or other sweet vermouth
1/2 ounce Cherry Heering or other cherry liqueur
1/2 teaspoon Pernod
1 lemon twist
How to Make It
Fill a pint glass with ice. Add all of the remaining ingredients except the twist and stir well. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with the lemon twist.
