"Cocktail engineer" Gina Word prepared her first batch of Midtown Sangria at the countercultural Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. "I lived on that and hummus for a week," she says.

- 1 1/2 cups water
- 3 tablespoons orange-clover honey
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- One 750-ml bottle dry but fruity white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc
- 12 ounces apple juice
- 8 orange wheels
- In a glass bowl, combine the water, honey and ground cinnamon and microwave at high power for 40 seconds. Stir well, then pour into a large pitcher and add the white wine and apple juice. Refrigerate the sangria until chilled, at least 2 hours. Stir well and pour into ice-filled red wine glasses. Garnish each drink with an orange wheel.
