The original martini, allegedly invented in the U.S. in the 1860s, was made with sweet vermouth. One of the first recipes for a dry martini, made with dry vermouth, appeared in Frank P. Newman's 1904 American Bar.

  1. Ice
  2. 3 ounces gin
  3. 1 lemon twist, for garnish
  4. 1 ounce dry vermouth
  1. Fill a pint glass with ice. Add the gin and vermouth and stir well. Strain into a chilled martini glass or coupe and garnish with the lemon twist.
