The Picador, a forerunner of the margarita, appeared in England's Café Royal Cocktail Book in 1937. The margarita allegedly made its print debut in America in December 1953, when Esquire named it the "drink of the month."

  • 1 lime wedge and kosher salt
  • Ice
  • 2 ounces blanco tequila
  • 3/4 ounce Cointreau or other triple sec
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 ounce Simple Syrup

How to make this recipe

  1. Moisten half of the outer rim of a rocks glass with the lime wedge and coat lightly with salt. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all of the remaining ingredients and shake well. Fill the rocks glass with ice and strain the drink into the glass.
