According to popular legend, this cocktail was created at the Manhattan Club in 1874, at a party given by Winston Churchill's American mother to celebrate Samuel J. Tilden's election as governor of New York.

- Ice
- 2 ounces rye whiskey
- 1 ounce sweet vermouth
- 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
- 3 maraschino cherries skewered on a pick
- Fill a pint glass with ice. Add the rye, vermouth and bitters and stir well. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with the skewered cherries.
