This is an adaptation of a 19th-century recipe from London's Garrick Club, whose members must be voted in. According to the original screening committee, "it would be better that ten unobjectionable men should be excluded than one terrible bore should be admitted."
Glassware Guide More Gin Cocktails
One 1-liter bottle chilled genever
One-half 750-ml bottle maraschino liqueur
48 ounces Lemon Syrup
16 ounces Simple Syrup
64 ounces chilled sparkling water
Ice, preferably 1 large block
2 small sliced oranges, for garnish
How to Make It
In a punch bowl, combine the genever with the maraschino liqueur and both syrups. Refrigerate until chilled, about 4 hours. Stir in the sparkling water, then add the ice and garnish with the oranges.
