At Flora, a restaurant located in an Art Deco building in downtown Oakland, consultant Erik Adkins set up a classics-minded cocktail program featuring drinks like this bittersweet whiskey sour. He's also bar manager of San Francisco's ultrapopular Vietnamese restaurant Slanted Door, where he's so committed to using the best ingredients that he makes his own mixers—including eight different bitters. Here, he employs one store-bought shortcut—a dash of Angostura bitters.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with all of the ingredients except the ice and the twist and shake well. Add ice and shake again. Strain the drink into a chilled martini glass and garnish with the lemon twist.
