Sweet, tart and strong, the caipirinha is mixed with the Brazilian spirit cachaça. Cachaça is similar to rum but made from sugarcane rather than molasses. "It's more sophisticated than rum because it's more pure," says Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, patriotically.

  2. 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice, plus 3 lime wedges and 1 lime wheel
  3. 1 teaspoon sugar
  4. 1/2 ounce simple syrup (see Note)
  5. 2 ounces cachaça
  1. Fill a rocks glass with ice. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the lime juice and lime wedges with the sugar and simple syrup. Add the cachaça and 1 cup of ice and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture into the rocks glass and garnish the caipirinha with the lime wheel.
Notes To make simple syrup, simmer 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan, stirring frequently, until the sugar has dissolved. The simple syrup can be refrigerated in a covered container for up to 1 month.
