The Cosmo was invented in the 1980s when Miami Beach bartender Cheryl Cook was developing cocktails for the new Absolut Citron. Starting with a recipe for the Harpoon (vodka, cranberry and lime juice), from a 1960s Ocean Spray ad, Cook added orange liqueur and citrus vodka. Patricia Richards mixes in simple syrup to offset the tartness.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, Cointreau, juices and Simple Syrup and shake well. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with the lemon twist.
