Instead of making sangria (which is usually a mix of red wine, fruit juice, club soda and sometimes liqueur), Isabel González mixes this deliciously tart punch for parties using red wine, fresh lemon juice and sugar.

  1. 2 cups fresh lemon juice
  2. 2/3 cup superfine sugar
  3. 4 cups dry red wine, such as Malbec
  4. 1 lemon, thinly sliced into rounds and seeded
  1. In a large pitcher, combine the lemon juice and sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the wine and chill for about 1 hour. Add the lemon slices and serve in punch glasses.
Make Ahead The punch can be refrigerated overnight. Notes The punch can be doubled.

The superfine sugar called for in this cocktail is just regular granulated sugar with unusually small crystals. Easily dissolved into cold liquids, superfine sugar is perfect for making mixed drinks extra smooth. If you can't find superfine sugar, you can make it at home by grinding granulated sugar in a food processor for 30 to 40 seconds. Wait a few seconds before opening the food processor lid so the sugar dust can settle.
