One night, while John Coltharp was devising this drink at Seven Grand, a song by Southern blues musician Blind Lemon Jefferson came on the jukebox. Like the blues, the cocktail combines sadness and joy in the form of sour and sweet.
4 dashes of Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel–Aged bitters or Angostura bitters
Scant 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce Simple Syrup
In a cocktail shaker, lightly muddle the lemon wedge. Add ice and the rye, bitters, lemon juice and Simple Syrup and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe, pinch the twist over the drink and drop it in.
