Blind Lemon Jefferson
- SERVINGS: Makes 1 Drink
One night, while John Coltharp was devising this drink at Seven Grand, a song by Southern blues musician Blind Lemon Jefferson came on the jukebox. Like the blues, the cocktail combines sadness and joy in the form of sour and sweet.
- 1 lemon wedge, plus 1 lemon twist for garnish
- Ice
- 2 ounces rye whiskey, preferably Sazerac
- 4 dashes of Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel–Aged bitters or Angostura bitters
- Scant 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 ounce Simple Syrup
- In a cocktail shaker, lightly muddle the lemon wedge. Add ice and the rye, bitters, lemon juice and Simple Syrup and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe, pinch the twist over the drink and drop it in.
