Longtime Seven Grand bartender Leo Rivas came up with the Blackened Orange, which John Coltharp describes as super-intense. Amaro Nonino gives the drink a rich bitter-orange flavor, plus hints of licorice and herbs.

  1. 1/4 ounce smoky single-malt Scotch, such as Islay
  2. Ice
  3. 2 ounces rye whiskey
  4. 1/2 ounce Campari
  5. 1/2 ounce Amaro Nonino or other amaro (Italian herbal liqueur)
  6. 2 dashes of orange bitters
  7. 1 orange twist, flamed, for garnish
  1. Rinse a chilled coupe with the Scotch; discard the excess. Fill a pint glass with ice. Add all of the remaining ingredients except the garnish and stir well. Strain into the prepared coupe and garnish with the flamed twist.
