<p>Though it isn't as hyped as the coast, inland Maine is spectacular, with thousands of lakes and ponds, acres of cool pine forests, and countless small, uncrowded towns where “the real Maine” is still found. Set just a block from the shores of the town's namesake lake and a 10-minute drive from Saddleback ski resort, the historic Rangeley Inn (where wealthy Massachusetts and Pennsylvania residents used to summer in the 1800s) is a great jumping-off point for experiencing the state's outdoorsy pursuits. The stately inn with its broad porch dominates upper Main Street; inside, the décor incorporates plentiful taxidermy (including a giant stuffed black bear), original tin ceilings, tufted chairs, and fireplaces. All 51 rooms are comfortable if simply furnished with reproduction antiques, and the “Pour House” tavern, with its good selection of Maine microbrews, also serves a meatloaf to die for. </p> <p><strong>Insider Tip:</strong> Since renovations here are ongoing (most recently the motor-lodge rooms were all upgraded), inquire about any potential noise/construction when making a reservation.</p> <p><strong>Room to Book:</strong> Request a large king room with private bath in the historic inn, or for more privacy, the corner motor-lodge suite with a balcony overlooking Haley Pond.</p>
