On a boulevard that’s all about glitz, JW wears its opulence lightly. The result is an intimate vibe despite the hotel’s three 14-story towers and manicured beachfront lawns, dotted with free-form pools and man-made lagoons, one with an artificial reef. The MO is so subtle, in fact, that at first glance guest rooms look almost plain. Further acquaintance reveals their charms—plush green carpeting, honey-colored wood trim, furniture with delicate fillips—as well as classic resort comforts like flat-screens and Bulgari toiletries in the 448 rooms. True, the bathrooms are big, but for a truly extravagant shower, hit the spa. The 35,000-square-foot ode to relaxation includes ocean-view showers with waist-high frosted glass; in the fitness center, exercisers watch the sun rise over the sea while doing their morning cardio.
Insider Tip: If you’re here during high season, claim your thatch-roofed palapa before breakfast—the 600-foot stretch of beach is on the narrow side.
Room to Book: One of the 12th-floor Caribbean Suites, which are as high as you can go (higher=better view) without booking a Presidential or VIP suite; the suites’ balconies are huge (140 square feet!).
