Hotel Carl Gustaf
French entrepreneur Jacques Laurent built the 14-room Hotel Carl Gustaf in 1991 after he had been vacationing with his family on St. Bart’s for years, which means that he knew the perfect spot for his idyllic island hideaway. Unlike most of the island’s top-tier properties, The Carl (as those in the know call it) isn’t right on the beach. Instead it occupies a spot on a steep hillside in the town of Gustavia, overlooking the main yacht-filled harbor. Each guest room has a private terrace with a plunge pool and panoramic ocean views, plus hand-carved beds and marble-tiled showers. The property has become known not just as a chic tropical retreat with a certain je ne sais quoi, but as one of the best places for sunset drinks on the entire isle.
