Hotel Basico
<p>Only a couple of decades ago, the corridor that starts below Cancún and extends south to the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum was a sleepy stretch of Caribbean coastline. Today, what's known as the Riviera Maya has reinvented itself as a first-rate destination. One of the more interesting places to stay is the Básico, the latest venture from the hip Micha brothers, who were behind the popular Hotel Deseo, also in bustling Playa del Carmen. This 15-room hideaway, just a block from the beach, forgoes the Deseo's streamlined aesthetic for a rougher, more industrial look. Rooms tend to be on the small side, but what they lack in size they make up for in style: exposed support beams, walls made of cement and local sand, and floors covered with recycled tires. </p>
