Short of setting up camp on the cobbles of the Grand-Place, you won't find closer lodgings to the historic heart of Brussels than at the Amigo. Set in the shadow of the Gothic Town Hall tower (on the site of what was once a medieval prison), the hotel now has a red-brick Renaissance-style façade and 173 airy rooms—many of which overlook the narrow streets around the old market square. Inside, the décor by London-based designer Olga Polizzi incorporates earth-toned modern furnishings with artifacts found at Brussels' antiques markets; Flemish tapestries, Surrealist prints, and miniature manifestations of comic-strip hero Tintin infuse each room with a slice of Belgian culture. Taking its inspiration from farther south, the Bocconi restaurant serves some of the best Italian food and wines in town. Planned European summits for 2009 mean the Amigo will welcome some discerning presidents and prime ministers—so look out for famous faces perusing the vast selection of single malts in the elegant, intimate bar.

Insider Tip: To find Tintin souvenirs (before Spielberg's upcoming film—in 2011—makes them ubiquitous), head to the cartoon hero's official boutique, close by at 13 Rue de la Colline.

Room to Book: The Armand Blaton suite has a vast private terrace overlooking the city—the perfect place for a party, if you can avoid Brussels' notorious rain.
