This 19th-century Restoration home on the Plaza de la Independencia is one of the latest (opened in 2007) in the line of historic but decrepit buildings reinvigorated by the Hospes hotel team. Modern-minimalist pieces—such as sleek chaise lounges in silvery velvet—are juxtaposed against the original carved ceilings and enormous French double windows. Even the least expensive of the spacious 41 rooms and suites feel luxurious, with king-size beds and huge spa-like showers (for the real thing, the on-site Bodyne spa offers facials and massages). Inviting public spaces include a large outdoor patio with comfy dark-wicker, white-cushioned loveseats and loads of candles.

Insider Tip: The hotel’s Senzone restaurant, headed by superstar husband-and-wife/chef-and-sommelier team Francisco Morales and Rut Cotroneo, is rapidly becoming one of Madrid’s hottest tables.

Room to Book: “Superior double” rooms (in the 300s) have freestanding bathtubs and marble spa showers, plus spectacular views of the Puerta de Alcalá, the massive arched structure on the plaza.
