A mere stone’s throw from the Cathedral and around the corner from the exciting Santa Caterina Market in what was once the early 20th-century townhouse mansion of the (still) powerful Cambó family, this hot hotel was a welcome addition to Barcelona’s hotel scene when it opened in 2005. The ubiquitous Sandra Tarruella–Isabel López design team’s keen eye for comfort and a soothing palette are evidenced in the 147 guest rooms, which are an exercise in smart minimalism (think lots of beige, built-ins, and organic materials). The hotel restaurant, Actual, supervised by star chef Ramón Freixa, of the Michelin-starred Racó d’en Freixa, serves cuisine creative enough to satisfy your curiosity about molecular gastronomy without jeopardizing the meal. (The pine-steamed sea bass with vegetables, wild mushrooms, and coriander is a standout.) Venture to the pool on the rooftop terrace for spectacular panoramas over the Gothic Quarter.
Room to Book: The higher the better is a good rule to follow, even though the soundproofing is effective. Request a room on the back (north) side, or simply as high as possible.
Insider Tip: In your comings and goings, avoid noisy Via Laietana, the main artery leading down to the port. Instead, take a scenic shortcut through the Mercat de Santa Caterina on your way to the nearby Born or Cathedral.
