Grand Amsterdam Sofitel

print
Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197, The Old Center
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
31-20-555-3111

COST: $$$$

What started out as the royal court in the 16th century and later became Amsterdam’s City Hall is now a suitably lavish hotel with an unbeatable location in the Old Centre. Although it’s a stone’s throw from the risqué Red Light District, the 178 individually decorated rooms couldn’t feel further away. Some are modern and brick-walled, with jewel-toned velvet curtains and modern art on the walls, but most skew toward the traditional, with tulip and delft prints on the beds and curtains. While the hotel is not notable for its interior design, it offers international travelers a high level of service; an interior courtyard with a trickling fountain and a lavish hammam in the lower-level spa rounds out the experience.

Room to book: One of the Sofitel Suites with a canal view, which are generally sunnier—and considerably larger.

Insider Tip: Reserve a table for the lavish Sunday brunch, served in the Council Chamber.
