Fashion-impresario Alan Faena and design “bad boy” Philippe Starck have transformed an abandoned century-old grain depository into the 105-room Faena Hotel + Universe. The outside may be prosaic, but the inside is pure Starck. A curtain-draped hallway lures guests to various corners of the “Universe,” among them the Library Lounge, a clubby space outfitted with chesterfields and antique lamps, and El Cabaret, a late-night stop for local bands. Absent are reception and concierge desks. Instead, each guest is assigned three “experience managers” who are responsible for check-in, checkout, and fulfilling any wish.
