Urban Modernists have another reason to visit San Miguel de Allende: the five-room Dos Casas. Formerly two separate vacation houses (hence the name), the newly opened inn off the main square retains the colonial flair of the original buildings (a massive wooden front door, cozy fireplaces, and stone walls) but incorporates contemporary Mexican design elements, such as floor-to-ceiling leather headboards and Barcelona chairs. The Del Jardín room overlooks the garden, and Del Fuente opens to the patio courtyard with a running stone fountain, but La Terraza is the one to score—the top-floor suite has a private outdoor terrace, with a whirlpool, and the best views of the city. At breakfast, hang out with chef Lupita Rodríguez while she whips up her signature chilaquiles.
