The Sofitel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt’s unassuming façade gets lost amid the 18th- and 19th-century pomp of Mitte, the historic center of Berlin. But once you enter the marble-and-glass lobby, the hotel reveals itself as a sleek alternative to the gilded palaces off Unter den Linden. The 92 rooms and suites manage a sharp spareness that doesn’t skimp on luxury: beds are piled with thick eiderdown duvets, and the monochrome bathrooms are amply sized; many have both bathtubs and shower stalls. In some of the rooms, balconies take full advantage of the surrounding neighborhood’s architectural splendor, affording views of the colonnaded cupola of the Französischer Dom.
