<p>Los Angeles–area painters and curators have transformed the industrial spaces of Culver City into a thriving art colony, and the metamorphosis at the Culver Hotel mirrors that resurgence. When the six-story property first opened in 1924, it quickly became a favored haunt of creative types. (Virtually the whole cast of Munchkins moved in during the filming of The Wizard of Oz.) After a decline that coincided with the fall of the city's film studios, the place was renovated in the late 1990's. The lobby was restored to its old-Hollywood glam: marble floors, mahogany-paneled walls, and a potted palm–dotted piano bar. The 46 antique-filled rooms are up next—their dated pastel color schemes are getting freshened up with walls and fabrics in a cool gray palette.</p>
