Chestnut Inn at Oquaga Lake
The old-fashioned inn opened as the Hotel Monaquaga in 1928. It was built by hand-carvers of American chestnut, which was wiped from the landscape by blight in the ‘30s; in 2006, the hotel, including its stone lobby fireplace (which can handle four-foot logs) and rare Knabe grand piano, got a loving renovation. Indulge in the classic diversions of the great lake resorts, including fishing, swimming, canoeing, and reading on the veranda. The menu at the Inn’s restaurant celebrates American cuisine: cedar plank salmon, bacon-wrapped meatloaf, and pork schnitzel.
