Maldonado has preserved the airy feel of the 16th-century building, set on Old San Juan's southern fringes: all suites have high ceilings, large windows, and balconies that overlook the busy street below. But sleek earth-toned furnishings, contemporary artwork, flat-screen televisions, and beds with sumptuous linens and padded headboards bring the décor luxuriously up to date.
