Blair Hill Inn
Arguably the finest inn in all of inland Maine (and possibly the entire state), the Blair Hill Inn is pure North Woods fantasy. The manicured 15-acre, 1891 estate with its Queen Anne Victorian manse sits atop a 20-foot fieldstone retaining wall high above majestic Moosehead Lake; sparkling views can be had from nearly every window in the house as well as the 90-foot veranda. In late 1990’s, Dan and Ruth McLaughlin moved from Chicago to restore the 9,000-square-foot home; every inch reflects their good taste, from the baby grand piano and Tiffany glass chandelier to gorgeous antiques to the cut hydrangea and tulips from their gardens. Each of the eight light and airy guest rooms is individually decorated, with wonderful featherbeds and amenities like locally milled soaps; some even have wood-burning fireplaces and baths with claw-foot tubs. People come from “wicked” far away for the inn’s five-course, prix fixe dinners of sophisticated dishes like Aztec wood-grilled tournedos of beef with mushroom cream fondue and orange buttermilk sherbet.
