The endlessly varied Atacama desert, with its geysers, salt lagoons, volcanoes, and oases, rivals Patagonia as a wilderness destination. Architect Francisco Rencoret and interior decorator Paula DomÃnguez have built a dream getaway for the adventure-minded. The eight bungalows are made of adobe, stone, and thatch; inside, hardwood and marble floors are set off by Bolivian rugs and wall hangings. Guides are on hand to take guests on excursions such as a bike ride to saline Cejar Pond or a picturesque hike crisscrossing the Vilamar River.
