In a bizarre chain of events, a Sydney-based environmental scientist was visiting a grocery story that was about to close down and came across a 35kg wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano.

The cheese, he tells Buzzfeed, weighed about as much as an 11-year-old child, and was just sitting around the store. Though it wasn’t officially for sale, he negotiated a sweet deal to take it home for himself, and then immediately posted it on a Facebook swapping board. He estimated the cheese was valued at over $2,000 and hoped to exchange it for a car.

“Now, I don’t really need 35 kilograms of Italian cheese…” he posted to the ‘Swap and Trade’ group, “…I’m posting here on the off chance I might be able to arrange a trade for something I really do need, like a laptop or ideally a (manual) car.”

“Someone offered a 2001 Ford Falcon, two Barinas, or a Ford Focus, and then my cousin offered me her Peugeot,” he told Buzzfeed.

Even though the swap would have been successful, and he ended up taking his cousin’s Perugeot and keeping the cheese. He is, however, planning on cutting it up and selling sections of the cheese to pay for a new battery and registration and insurance. Resourceful!

A new set of wheels and he doesn’t even have to sacrifice his whole wheel of cheese: not a bad deal at all.
