McDonald’s Finally Testing the ‘Walk-Thru’ Lane of Your Intoxicated Dreams
For generations, it’s been McDonald’s version of the Sphinx’s riddle: You only want McDonald’s late at night when you’ve been drinking, but the only part of the McDonald’s that is open late night is the drive thru. How are you supposed to get McDonald’s?
In the past, we’ve thankfully had to settle with the answer: Hey, why not be sensible and not shove a bunch of greasy fast food in your face at 3 am in the morning? But a McDonald’s in the United Kingdom has a new idea: Try our walk thru lane!
According to The Sun, a Golden Arches location in Llandudno, North Wales – which, lucky for them, happens to be near a nightclub – has tried opening a dedicated late night pedestrian “walk-thru” lane between the hours of 2:30 am and 4 am. After just one weekend, management at the MickeyD’s said the walk-thru lane was so successful they plan to make it a regular weekend fixture. And by successful, I’m guessing that means the number of hamburgers sold was greater than the number of drunken brawls.
For those wondering if the world’s largest burger chain is planning on rolling out these late night lanes in other locations, a McDonald’s spokesperson seemed to tamp down any enthusiasm. “The ‘walk-thru’ was a local initiative by the business manager of the restaurant to invite local residents to come and enjoy a meal at the restaurant after their night out at the newly reopened nightclub Broadway,” she said. “As the restaurant is in the process of securing a 24 hour license, customers can only use the drive-thru to order food at night, so the ‘walk-thru’ is just a play on how customers can come and enjoy a nice meal, later in the evening.”
With an answer like that, this walk-thru line sounds more like a glitch in the Matrix than the future of late-night dining. As The Sun points out, McDonald’s UK even addresses how drive-thrus are specifically for cars on their website. “McDonald's drive thru is for people in motor vehicles only,” the company told a person complaining they couldn’t even bike through the drive-thru. “Bicycles are not permitted on our drive thru due to the health and safety policies we have in place.”
Oh come on, McDonald’s. When have you ever done anything for health reasons?
