Border Control Finds 1,400 lbs of Marijuana Hidden in Coconuts
Mixing coconuts and alcohol is a great way to make a tropical drink. Mixing coconuts and 1,432 pounds of marijuana on the other hand is a great way to get a prison sentence.
Yesterday, the US Customs and Border Protection announced they had recently discovered that massive amount of marijuana in a shipment of coconuts as they came into Texas over the Pharr International Bridge from Mexico. Officials estimate the illegal drugs, which were broken into a total of 2,486 individual packages, were worth about $285,000.
The CBP seemed to be in a pretty good mood after the bust, even opting for a Harry Nilsson joke on their official Twitter feed, writing, “Smugglers put marijuana in the coconut instead of lime” – a nod to the famous singer’s well known tune, “Coconut.”
Apparently, a lot of suspect produce is coming over the Pharr International Bridge. Back in January, authorities found nearly half a million dollars’ worth of marijuana disguised in carrot-shaped camouflage. Plenty of people say we need to keep marijuana illegal to protect our children; what about needing to legalize marijuana to protect our fruits and vegetables! Something to consider next time you’re drinking coconut water and sudden start to get a buzz.
