We are currently living in a golden age of the milkshake. Or at the very least a super-sized age. Never before have there been so many blended ice cream drinks served in such vast containers and garnished so generously. Thanks to the buzz around places like Patissez in Canberra, Australia and New York’s Black Tap, milkshakes that probably contain enough calories to sustain a human being for the better part of a week have dominated social media. And they are delicious (you know, once you get the cookies and entire pies off the top), but it’s time they graduated to adulthood, naturally with the addition of some alcohol.
Bub City, a Chicago barbecue joint and one of the founders of the massive Windy City Smokeout taking place later this month, is more than happy to oblige on the boozy milkshake front. The massive shakes, served in (the obligatory at this point) Mason jars come in basically every flavor besides Shamrock: cookies n cream, vanilla with cream cheese frosting, peanut butter, strawberry, cold brew coffee, chocolate with an Oreo rim, salted caramel and chocolate peanut butter banana. The boozy element is up to you. For an extra $4 they’ll add a strong shot of whatever you want, although they say they’re partial to bourbon.
Ice cream and booze are having a moment of their own right now. The beer float has fully come into its own as bar managers are finally figuring out how to get beyond just stouts and porters to make shakes out of IPAs and sours. And the red wine ice cream float sounds slightly terrifying, but actually works surprisingly well (just maybe don’t get out your nicest bottle for it). Now that we’ve got liquor appropriately folded into our summer treats all the bases are fully covered. Just maybe keep these away from ice cream truck owners. Tossing booze into the mix seems like the sort of thing that could really exacerbate an already tense situation.
The boozy shakes are available all summer at Bub City’s Rosemont location. Now go forth and Instagram.
