It doesn't get more affordable.
Ever dream of owning a sprawling oceanside hideaway, but that it would cost too much? Chances are, you can afford $1.45 a year in rent. No, we didn’t get our decimal point wrong or forget to add the word “million.” This is an actual farm up for lease in Wales.
The National Trust announced this week that they’re looking for a tenant to look after Parc Farm on top of Great Orme aka a stunning piece of ocean view landscape. For only £1 a year, you’ll get a four-bedroom home overlooking the Irish Sea, rolling green hills, and sheep.
Part of the deal of the low price is that who ever takes over the farm will be in charge of herding and shearing a flock of 416 sheep as part of the non-profit’s conservation efforts. The grasslands and their animals are in danger because of overgrazing, so the conservation is looking for a unique person to help move the sheep to less endangered land to allow grasslands to flourish again.
Here's the thought: The sheep munch away at the overgrown grasses and heather, but they leave behind the fragile and threatened plants and animals, allowing them to flourish. "Unless we implement a very specific grazing regime we will not see these most fragile habitats recover," said general manager William Greenwood. "Put simply, to ensure a healthy and beautiful landscape we need the most agriculturally productive pastureland to be grazed less, and the least agriculturally productive grassland to be grazed more."
The owner will be in charge of herding the sheep over a difficult landscape every day. "For the benefit of the Orme we're looking for a tenant who sees a productive farm as one which maintains healthy wildlife and encourages visitors to act for nature, as well as produce good, healthy food,” added Greenwood. "And to give him or her a head start and the best chance of success, we're taking away the financial pressure of having to cover the rent for the farm, the grazing rights and the farmhouse each year."
If you’re interested, apply here, as they hope to have someone take on the new role in September.
