Support the Seattle Seahawks with Skittle Sausages

This week in weird food news: Skittle sausages in Seattle, Tokyo's tomato vending machine, chocolate-flavored toothpaste and more.

The Internet is a black hole for strange, weird and wonderful things—especially when it comes to food. Rather than dive in yourself, let F&W do it for you. Here, four of the most absurd food items we saw this week.

Skittle Sausage: Inspired by Seattle Seahawk’s Skittle-loving running back, Marshawn Lynch, one Seattle butcher has created the Beat Mode sausage made with the fruity candy. Available for your “enjoyment” at Blue Max Meats for just $4.99 a pound.

Chocolate Toothpaste: Finally, a toothpaste that appeals to the people who really need to brush their teeth: chocoholics. Crest’s latest flavor of toothpaste is Mint Chocolate Trek, which boasts a “rich, creamy cocoa flavor.” The perfect gift for the Valentine in your life who struggles with dental hygiene.

Pentagonal Oranges: Don’t you hate how round oranges are? You put them on a table and then they just roll off. It’s infuriating. Thankfully, Japanese fruit farmers created Gokakukei Iyokan, a pentagon-shaped mandarin-orange hybrid. Sadly, just 300 of them will be on sale next month in Japan, so don’t hold your breath waiting for them to appear at your local Whole Foods.

Sushi-Flavored Chips: Americans have odd ideas about potato chips. Lay’s has called upon its fans to come up with a new flavor. The winner will get $1 million and have their chip made and sold. Right now the flavor submissions include sushi, corned beef hash, cotton candy, bacon and roasted marshmallow (that's a flavor?) and apple pie with cheese.

Tomato Vending Machine: Recently, Tokyo got its first tomato vending machine. Installed at a locker room facility that serves a nearby running route, the machine dispenses two items: a 280-gram bag of tomatoes and a 180-gram bag of tomatoes. Kagome, the company behind the vending machine, claims that tomatoes are great for combatting fatigue and therefore perfect for joggers.
