Should Have Bought the Haddock

By Marcia Kiesel Posted March 05, 2007

There was only one piece left and it didn’t seem quite large enough for three, so I skipped the haddock and bought two very fresh looking barramundi filets. I didn’t ask questions about the barramundi until the young man wrapped it up and gave it to me. I thought it was from Australia, and he said it can be, but this particular fish was farmed in Asia. He said it was like striped bass. Hmmm. Well, it smelled and tasted like fresh water, and my parents and I didn’t care for it. The texture was nice, meaty like striped bass, but no way was there the superior flavor, just muddy water. Farm raised striped bass doesn’t taste or even look like the wild, either. I’m all for farmed fish that is reasonably priced and provides good nutrition, but it’s not for me.
