The Internet is a black hole for strange, weird and wonderful things—especially when it comes to food. Rather than dive in yourself, let F&W do it for you. Here, five of the most absurd food items we saw this week.
Cronut Auction: Proving that Cronut-mania will never end, a dozen of Dominique Ansel’s pastry hybrids recently sold at City Harvest’s Bid Against Hunger auction for $14,000.
Pie-Croissant Hybrid: The newest addition to the wonderful world of pastry hybrids is the Piessant. Available at CakeHag.com, the piessant is a croissant dough wrapped around pie fillings. That's what they say anyway—the first flavor is "butter almond" and we've never heard of that pie.
Ramen Cake: While Americans can’t stop merging one pastry with another, the Japanese are still going crazy one food made to look like another. Multiple bakeries in Japan are offering their versions of incredibly life-like ramen cakes, which typically use jelly to recreate the soup broth and strings of pureed, sweetened chestnuts (usually seen in Mont Blanc pastries) as the noodles.
Downtown Abbey Wine: Alert your servants! The only wine offered to guests from now on is Downton Abbey wine. Both the claret (British slang for a red Bordeaux) and Bordeaux blanc are available for just $17 a bottle.
Sweaty Cheese: People often describe particularly pungent cheese as smelling like feet. In this case, the description would be spot on. Two “bio-hacker artists” created cheeses made with bacterial samples from people’s feet and armpits. The cheeses are currently on display at Trinity College in Dublin.
