Here, we reveal wines we love costing less than $17, with wine experts we love occasionally weighing in.
Who: Kristin Donnelly, editor of this column and cofounder of Stewart & Claire, an all-natural line of lip balms.
What: 2013 Črnko Jareninčan
Why: Even after leaving my full-time gig as a food editor at Food & Wine last year, I’m still lucky enough to taste a lot of wine. My husband works for a small wine importer, so when we’re not drinking the dregs of his samples open from a day of selling, or tasting potential new wines for his portfolio, we’re buying wines we’ve never tried to expand our palates and knowledge. But, for the first time since we’ve been together, we started buying this $17 white about once a week. Yes, it’s toward the higher end of “cheap,” but the wine comes in a 1-liter bottle and lasts us for two nights (or one very festive one). While this bottle is from Slovenia, home of culty (and sometimes loony) winemakers who are known for aging their wines in clay pots underground, this white isn’t the least bit wacky. It’s crisp and clean with just a whisper of minerality that will please geeks and casual drinkers alike. You can pair it with anything fish-related or drink it happily with nothing at all.
