Who: Annie Favia-Erickson
What: Viticulturist
Where: Favia Wines

Shortly after I drove cross country from DC to Napa, I was working for Cathy Corison in her cellar. I knew that the wine business was where I was meant to be, but I also knew that I had not yet found exactly where I wanted to contribute. Cathy had just purchased the Kronos vineyard in St. Helena, and, being a small family business, it was all hands on deck one day when we headed out of the damp, dark, cold cellar and into the sunshine to prune. I remember walking through the rows of these old, head-trained vines. The bright yellow mustard was up to my knees and filled with loads of interesting insects. The earth smelled fresh and authentic and transported me back to kneeling beside my mother in her magnificent garden and helping her pull weeds. Here in Cathy’s vineyard, I knew—I was going to go back to school and study viticulture and spend my life farming. Nature has such an incredibly grounding influence on me, and I truly feel at home outside. Now I grow grapes, walnuts, a vegetable garden and tea and tisanes. I am fascinated by the intricacies of nature and love to photograph nature up close with my macro lens. That is where you can see what miracles the plant and animal kingdoms contain.
