Ironic Indulgence

By Kristin Donnelly Posted February 09, 2007

A friend recently told me that the best potluck dish she ever had was a bowl of McDonald's french fries at a party in New Orleans. While some people made tofu dishes and carrot salads (it was a bit of a hippie gathering), one girl too busy to cook brought six Super Sized bags of fries. Normally, the crowd would scoff at eating the fat-laden fried sticks from the “evil empire.” But the girl arranged them in a pretty dish, changing their context so much that even the radically liberal activists scarfed them by the handful. Apparently, the irony of the presentation made the fries acceptable, and everyone ate them with a wink. The lesson: A pretty piece of pottery can redeem even a fast-food french fry.
