After last week’s nail-biting Restaurant Wars, Top Chef kept emotions high with a tearjerker of an episode last night. First, the great chef Hubert Keller showed up to judge a coffee-centric Quickfire with $10,000 at stake. Then, Hurt Locker star and New Orleans–native Anthony Mackie arrived to introduce the Elimination Challenge: Prepare a dish that reminds you of home. The challenge—which took place at Dooky Chase’s, Leah Chase’s legendary restaurant—brought tears to more than one cheftestant’s eyes and even had some of the judges showing their softer side. For those playing F&W’s Fantasy Top Chef, here are the points earned and lost by chefs last night.
Nicholas Elmi: +1 for Nina predicting that he’ll make it to the finale. +3 for crying three times—including once while serving his dish to the judges. +10 for winning the Elimination Challenge with his melt-in-your-mouth gnudi (his daughter’s favorite). Total points: 52
Carlos Gaytan: +1 for his story about first meeting his wife. He told her in Spanish, “You are going to be my wife.” And now she is. Awww. +3 for being on top of the Elimination Challenge with his cochinita pibil. Total points: 47
Shirley Chung: +3 for winning the Quickfire Challenge with her coffee-crusted steak. +1 for planning to put some of the $10,000 she won toward a new air conditioner and being super excited about it. +1 for crying on camera. Total points: 46
Stephanie Cmar: +1 for coming up with “bacon-and-coffee-ham jam,” which sounds like next year’s must-have condiment. +1 for calling Anthony Mackie a “stud muffin.” +3 for being on top of the Elimination Challenge with her mussels and pickled peppers. Total points: 40
Justin Devillier: +1 for showing his redneck roots by saying, “Rice and gravy made with squirrel is, to me, delicious.” +1 for his desert island food choices: caviar, Champagne and tacos. -3 for being on the bottom of the Elimination Challenge with his overly restrained rice with gravy. Total points: 32
Brian Huskey: -1 for not respecting the Top Chef risotto curse during the Quickfire. +1 for crying on camera. -3 for being on the bottom of the Elimination Challenge with his smokeless steak and potatoes. Total points: 20
Travis Masar: -10 for being told to pack his knives and go for his undercooked biscuits. Total points: 20
Louis Maldonado: +2 for keeping his winning streak going by besting Travis in an Asian-themed episode of Last Chance Kitchen. Total points: 14
Here are the remaining chefs, whose scores did not change this episode: Nina Compton (54) and Carrie Mashaney (46).
