Americans may have embraced farro and quinoa as alternative grains, but barley and oats have been left behind. NPR reports that while grain growers have pushed for an oats and barley resurgence, demand remains disappointingly low. We love the heart-healthy benefits of these grains along with their underappreciated versatility: See legendary French chef Michel Bras’s recipe for pan-seared chicken breasts topped with a rich, creamy barley foam.

Grilled Chicken Tacos

Not that you needed an excuse to eat tacos, but today is National Taco Day. At New York City's Dos Toros, brothers Leo and Oliver Kremer offer these amazing San Francisco–style tacos. They shared the recipe, which calls for grilled, marinated chicken thighs, shredded Jack cheese, salsa verde, avocados, onions, tomatoes and cilantro. Unsurprisingly, the easy dish quickly became an F&W staff favorite.

Today, F&W revealed its newest (and most adventurous) contributing editor: Andrew Zimmern. Though you may know him best as the guinea-pig-eating and snapping-turtle-catching host of the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods, Zimmern is also a talented and classically trained chef. He'll share photos from his exotic travels, and most importantly, a fabulous recipe for the home cook, each week. Kicking things off today: Thai Hot-and-Sour Coconut-Chicken Soup.

Master cookbook author Paula Wolfert's latest tome, The Food of Morocco, drops on Tuesday. The October issue of Food & Wine gives a sneak peek into the new book, which expands on her groundbreaking 1973 work, Couscous and Other Good Food from Morocco. Wolfert’s talents in the kitchen, however, go beyond Moroccan cuisine, as seen in her rustic recipe for Lyonnais chicken in red wine vinegar.

Joe Jonas is quite the foodie, according to today’s New York Times profile of the pop star. The middle Jonas brother, who appeared on last season's Top Chef as a guest judge, discussed his desire to start a food blog, his new solo career, and how he idolizes chefs like Ferran Adrià, Mario Batali, Tim Love and Susan Feniger. "If there’s a chef I really like, I will freak, because I think their talent is so different from what I do," Jonas said. Don't freak, but Feniger’s sweet, sour and spicy curry chicken recipe should get you excited too.

Tonight’s sunset marks the start of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and first of the High Holidays. Among the traditional celebratory foods, round challah bread represents the cyclical year, lamb (primarily the head) symbolizes the "head" of the year—and, most importantly, honey is meant to infuse the new year with sweetness. Whether or not you’ll be celebrating tonight, Honey-and-Spice-Glazed Chicken Breasts make a delicious and fast weeknight meal.

A study published in The Archives of Internal Medicine this week suggests that caffeine may reduce the risk of depression in women, the Los Angeles Times reports. After surveying 50,739 women over a 10-year period, researchers found that those who consumed one or more cups of coffee a day were less likely to be diagnosed as clinically depressed. Whether or not coffee keeps you in a happier state, it's still worth more than a quick buzz. The flavors add delicious depth to recipes like this one for Chicken Breasts Glazed with Coffee BBQ Sauce.

Garlicky Chicken Thighs

ABC’s new food-centric chat show, The Chew, premiered this afternoon. Highlights included Michael Symon showing off his “Got Pork” tattoo, Carla Hall’s 40-year-old Betty Crocker pancake recipe and Daphne Oz’s budget-friendly smoothie recipes (plus a visit from her famous Dr. dad). Noticeably absent from the studio was Mario Batali, who appeared later telecast from a charity golf tournament. Off-site location aside, Batali still managed to whip up a pizza. Here’s hoping the clog-clad chef will be more present in future episodes since we love his affordable recipes, like this one for grilled chicken thighs coated in a crispy, garlicky crumb topping.
